Greyhound Lord Ducal, bred by champion footballer Tony Lockett, tonight blitzed his rivals in the $250,000 Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park.
Trained by Jon Roberts and owned by his wife Jenny, Lord Ducal began well behind Mr Moorooduc, who seemed to stumble slightly on the first turn, enabling Lord Ducal to build a considerable lead.
Dyna Lachlan slotted into second position down the back straight after avoiding trouble that saw second favourite Turanza Bale crash out.
Lord Ducal’s comfortable win ended a 21-year exasperating run for the Roberts as he defeated Dyna Lachlan and Mr Moorooduc third, with favourite Take The Kitty and Octare running on late.
