Following on from our post featuring the fields of the heats for the Solo Melbourne Cup 2009, we thought we would take a closer look at Lara legend Graeme Bate, and how much these heats mean to him.
Aiming for an unheard of fourth Cup win, Bate has eight runners in the heats of the $250,000 Group 1 feature – last start Group 3 Macro Meats Shootout winner Velocette, Dentax Bale, My Lippling, Hayder Bale, Gripen Bale, Turanza Bale, Bora Bale and Dyna Forte.
Bate’s main challenges will come from Devon Meadows trainer Darren McDonald, who has six heat runners.
The winner of the eight heats qualify for the final on Thursday, November 26 with the box draw to take place on Saturday night. We’ll be sure to update our Melbourne Cup page with the box draw once it is released, so be sure to bookmark the page and check the blog for updates. The box draw is supposed to be released after 10pm.
Meanwhile, Bate has Amity Bale entered in the final of tomorrow night’s $36,000 Group 2 Bold Trease Carnival Cup.
Amity Bale, who broke a track record at The Meadows a fortnight ago, is a winner of six group races since July and is likely to start a warm favourite from box five.
It would really be a fairy tale to go for four wins in Australian greyhound racing’s greatest event… and we think Bate could be just the person to pull it off.
